Join us for an engaging evening exploring the decline of community—and the power of rebuilding it together. 

Like communities across the country, Racine and Kenosha have experienced a decline in volunteerism and participation in civic and social organizations. Together we will watch “Join or Die” (film is rated PG), a compelling documentary that examines the deep connection between civic engagement and the health of our society and, to a great extent, our personal wellbeing. 

“Join or Die” follows the work of sociologist Robert Putnam whose research, particularly his “Bowling Alone” thesis, highlights the detrimental effects of decreased community involvement. The film argues that a lack of social connections and collective action weakens democracy and suggests that re-engaging in community groups is crucial for a healthy society.
 
Following the film, local leaders and statewide experts on civic life will discuss how we can work together to reignite participation in our own communities. Audience participation is encouraged.
